What is a shamisen, you ask? Click on my Muxtape link and listen to the Silent Skies track, “Flight to Egypt (live).” This performance took place December 1’st 2007 at the CCC Holy Grind Coffeehaus. The shamisen was played by Kenneth Wallin, lap dulcimer by yours truly, and Ryan (Harlot Bride) on percussion (djembe). The shamisen is 16’th century Japanese evolution of one of the world’s oldest instruments. It’s diatonic tuning made for a good blend with the Appalachian lap dulcimer that I played during this set. I love the way the shamisen sounds, but I also love the way it looks. Check out this YouTube Video for a closer look and sound of this instrument.
